Spray Solutions for ToadTurret: What to Know
One of the most common questions we get is “what do I put in it?” ToadTurret lets you fill the spray reservoir with your own solution, and there are a few things worth knowing before you get started.
This guide covers the general categories of solutions people use, the safety considerations you should be aware of, and how to keep your device running well long-term.
A note before we start: We are not in a position to recommend specific products or exact formulations. What we can do is share what has been tested, point you to the relevant guidelines, and make sure you are aware of the safety considerations. Always do your own research and follow the guidelines published by your state government.
Humane Control Guidelines
The most important reference for humane cane toad control in Australia is the National Standard Operating Procedure (NATSOP-CAN001). This document outlines approved methods for humane cane toad management and is maintained by the relevant state and territory authorities.
We strongly recommend reading and following these guidelines. They are available from your state government’s environment or biosecurity department.
What People Use
Based on available research and what we have seen in the field, spray solutions generally fall into a few categories:
- Essential oil-based solutions. Diluted essential oil preparations are the most common option we have seen. Research has indicated that certain essential oils can be effective for cane toad control when properly diluted.
- Water only. Some users run water through the system as a deterrent rather than a control measure. The spray can startle toads and discourage them from staying in the area.
- Alert-only mode. ToadTurret can also run without any spray at all. In this mode, the device detects and reports cane toads (uploading images to your dashboard when connected to WiFi) but does not activate the spray. This is a good option if you want monitoring and notifications without any spray.
What to Avoid
Dettol should not be used. The RSPCA considers Dettol to be inhumane for cane toad control. We recommend against using it.
When choosing a spray solution, check that your chosen approach aligns with the NATSOP guidelines and humane control standards published by your state government.
Safety Warnings
Waterways
If you are using essential oil-based solutions, do not place the device near ponds, dams, creeks, or any waterway. Essential oils, including clove oil, are toxic to fish and other aquatic species. Even small amounts entering a waterway can cause serious harm.
This is non-negotiable. If your property has waterways nearby, position the device well away from them or use water-only or alert-only mode.
Pets
Some dogs and cats can be sensitive to essential oils. If you are using an essential oil-based solution:
- Keep the device away from kennels, pet beds, and areas where pets rest or sleep
- Maintain a reasonable distance between the spray zone and pet areas
- Consider running in alert-only mode if you have concerns

Protecting Your Pump
The pump inside ToadTurret is designed for regular use, but concentrated or corrosive solutions can shorten its lifespan. Here is how to get the most out of it:
- Dilute your solution. This is the single most important thing. Concentrated solutions are harder on the pump and the tubing.
- Flush periodically. Running clean water through the system every now and then helps clear any residue that might build up.
- Check the tubing. Over time, some solutions can degrade the tubing. Give it a visual check every few weeks and replace if it looks worn or brittle.
- Replacement pumps are available. If your pump does wear out, replacements are available in the ToadOps store. It is a straightforward swap.
Filling the Reservoir
The reservoir is designed to be easily accessible for refilling. When topping up:
- Avoid overfilling
- Be careful it isn’t on an angle or it may spill out the nozzle
How often you need to refill depends on how many toads the device is encountering and how much spray it delivers per engagement. On busy nights (warm, humid, after rain), it will use more. In quieter periods, it will use less.
A Practical Approach
If you are just getting started, here is a sensible approach:
- Read the NATSOP guidelines for your state
- Ensure your solution isn’t too viscous If your solution is too thick, it will not spray properly.
- Try alert-only mode first This lets you review detections on the dashboard and get comfortable with the system.
- Keep an eye on the pump and tubing for the first few weeks to see how your chosen solution affects them.
- Position carefully with waterways and pets in mind.
